Midco and TOMAR Team Up to increase safety
In a collaborative effort with Midco Sales, a Jerr-Dan® Dealer for tow trucks located in Chandler, AZ, TOMAR developed and produced a self-contained, wide-out warning device designed to increase visibility and promote safety cushions on the roadway.
“Pete Colantoni of Midco Sales worked very closely with our Custom-solution Development Team on this project” says Matt Murray, Vice President of Strategic Sales and Marketing at TOMAR. “Pete brought decades of towing experience and a passion for protecting the lives of towing responders to help define what he was looking for in a new safety device. Pete is an active advocate for the safety of Towers, and the Slow Down. Move Over. Law.” Continues Murray. “After development and upon testing the prototypes, it was clear what the mission was here. To provide safety with our new deployable “wings”, and that’s where the name came from. We hope this solution will be like an angel watching over those who put their lives on the line to help others in need.”
Commitment to Safety & Reliability
With a wide variety of optical warning devices on the market, TOMAR focuses on robust, long-range solutions with the emphasis on safety and reliability. The Angel Wings™ were designed to increase the visibility of the towing vehicles, by mounting to the side of the rack and extending the warning lights to a length as wide as the side-mounted mirrors on the truck. The result is a gas shock-supported set of arms with TOMAR’s waterproof, SAE J595-compliant RECT-13 warning lamps providing almost twice the warning length of just a stand-alone traditional light bar.
Rugged and Robust
The RECT lamps are mounted to an aluminum extrusion, on both the front and back. Inside the extrusion, a potted waterproof control module and waterproof lamp connectors make the Angel Wings™ completely sealed from moisture and dust. The controller comes standard with programmable warning patterns and flash rates, along with built-in direction arrow functions. The two Wings work together, as a single controller operates both sides.
The built-in controller also uses simple 12-24v positive input switching on a control harness, so the Angel Wings™ do not require a proprietary controller inside the cab. “Depending on the vehicle install, the Wings could also be controlled outside of the cab, or from multiple locations” says Murray.
Mechanically, the Angel Wings™ fold and lock in place with a larger locking device, compatible with gloved hands, and flash in both open and closed positions. Once released, the arms self-lift using a gas tubed shock. In case of impact, the extended arms have a hinge which allows them to break forward or backward, reducing injury and/or damage. Additionally, the Wings cans be configured with RECT lamps both front and rear facing, or only rear facing.
Built for Towers
TOMAR’s collaboration with Midco has been a homerun for safety” says Sean McShea, Headquarters Account Manager at TOMAR.
“We produce a specific towing lightbar with the tower’s needs in mind and are proud to add Angel Wings™ to the options. We manufacture this solution right here, in our Gilbert, Arizona manufacturing facility, and sell them exclusively through our partners at Midco.
We have a long history working with Midco, and can confidently say they built a truck by towers, for towers.
